MATES Mentoring Project

Summary

MATES (Mentoring and Tutoring Education Scheme) is an exciting and successful equity initiative that has been developed by The University of Auckland and Great Potentials Foundation. MATES has been offered in selected secondary schools in Auckland since 2002.

MATES works with Year 12-13 students identified by their schools as 'having the potential to succeed in tertiary education'. Through a combination of mentoring and tutoring, MATES aims to encourage academic achievement, raise aspirations and enhance self-confidence.

MATES links up successful University students with matched secondary school students in a programme that includes an individual mentoring relationship, small group tutoring, and group workshops that focus on skills such as leadership and self management.
