Whangarei Boys' High School Mentoring Programme

Summary

The Year 13 Dean and Resource Teacher Learning and Behaviour (RTLB) have worked together since 2001 to set up, coordinate and supervise mentoring in the belief that strong mentoring relationships benefit both Year 9 and Year 13 boys.

Fitting into a new and bigger school can be unsettling for some boys. It takes time and patience to develop supportive relationships as boys' circumstances change and because of the shifting needs of school structure, activities and organisation. Mentoring is one way to help some younger boys cope with change associated with transition from Year 8 in a smaller school. At this school, mentors are Year 13 boys who are also prefects. They undergo training to strengthen their personal qualities and skills as peer mentors and as student leaders.
