Every year the Youth Mentoring Network asks Businesses, Government agencies and Communities, to support our campaign in the
recruitment of Mentors for our young people throughout New Zealand. If you know anyone that might consider being a Mentor to a
young person in 2011, then please ask them to complete our online form to register their interest.
Fresh Start
The government have introduced the Fresh Start youth justice reforms to address youth offending in New Zealand, which includes a mentoring component.
What is Fresh Start?
Fresh Start initially targets the group of around 1,000 serious and persistent offenders, aged between 14 and 16 years, including a small group of around eighty 12 and 13 year olds who are accused of committing serious crimes and those who continue to commit crimes. Fresh Start provides a tougher and significantly more flexible framework, which offers a greater range of options for responding to these young offenders.

"An act of adult kindness can be a key turning point in a young person's life. I remember the boy who told me that when he was walking home one wet afternoon, the deputy principal stopped and gave him a ride. That simple action made him believe he was a worthwhile person and he went on to complete a university degree."

"It has made me less shy in front of people. It has given me someone to talk to about anything. I can tell my mentor anything and she will act like a friend not a judge." (Student 2005)

"For the first 4 to 6 weeks - all I got from my student was a grunt - then months later at graduation he blew me away with his speech in front of 80 people. His confidence has soared." (Mentor 2005)

"Being a part of the programme has been really rewarding because it has helped me develop both personally and professionally. The mentoring aspect of the scholarship was great, I always knew I had support if I needed it which was reassuring."

"I've found the mentoring the most beneficial part of the scholarship. Its great to have a network of experienced and successful people available when things get tough or even to just bounce ideas off".
