Mentoring Providers

Graeme Dingle Foundation: Stars

The Graeme Dingle Foundation is a child and youth charity delivering programmes to young Kiwis. Our programmes are offered in over 20 communities across New Zealand every year. These programmes are licensed and delivered by community organisations. Our vision is to transform young lives forever.

One of these programmes is Stars, which is a 12-month interactive programme that supports, motivates and positively reinforces Year 9 students during their first year at high school.

Overview

Stars peer Year 9 students during their first year at high school with Year 12 and 13 students as mentors to their year 9 counterparts and takes four paths (peer mentoring, adventure camp, a community project and a community adventure). Research shows that Stars helps strengthen the sense of community within schools by bringing younger and older students together.

Stars is underpinned by this whakatauki (proverb):

Tukua kia tu takitahi nga whetu o te rangi
Let each star in the sky shine its own light

About the mentoring

This is a school-based mentoring programme where 4 senior students/peer mentors are grouped with 16 year 9 students. Peer mentors work with year 9 students during terms 1 to 3 of the academic year, with the participating teacher taking over for term 4. Mentors meet with the young person weekly.
