Mentoring Providers

Hoa Motuhake Sports Trust

The Hoa Motuhake Sports Trust, established in 2020, exists to transform young lives through the power of sport and mentorship. Our flagship programme, Te Pou o Te Whare, was developed in partnership with Sport NZ, Healthy Families Ōtautahi, Oranga Tamariki and VOYCE, ensuring it is grounded in evidence, co-design, and the lived experiences of the communities we serve.

Our 3 objectives are:

1. Remove key barriers to sports participation.

2. Use sport and mentorship to build confidence, well-being and connection.

3. Reduce youth offending and disrupt the care to custody pathway.

Overview

Te Pou o Te Whare is a five-year sports mentoring programme for at-risk and disadvantaged tamariki in care aged 7–12yrs. We remove multiple barriers to participation and use sport and trusted relationships as catalysts for building resilience, confidence, and connection. Our kaupapa is guided by the belief that every child deserves the opportunity to play, grow and thrive—regardless of their circumstances. The tamariki we support live predominantly in high-deprivation communities and often experience complex trauma including exposure to family violence, addiction, gang environments, abuse, and time in care. These challenges significantly affect their confidence, development, and engagement in positive community activities.

About the mentoring

Through long-term mentoring and community sport, we help tamariki overcome adversity, reconnect with their strengths and identity, and build pathways to brighter futures. To date, Hoa Motuhake has supported 100 tamariki with the dedication of 90 volunteer Sport Mentors, delivering over 7,850 sports sessions. These meaningful experiences create opportunities for tamariki to grow, connect, and experience success in safe, supportive environments.
