We provide mentorship and advocacy alleviating barriers for rangatahi. Supporting rangatahi within the community who are dealing with a range of life challenges, we work in a preventative way by accessing and providing essential services for rangatahi, ensuring safety planning is completed, utilising a triage system for all young people entering Ko Wai Au services.
We foster a safe, welcoming, and non-judgmental environment where rangatahi feel empowered to access services. Our kaimahi are trained to recognise the diverse needs of rangatahi, including those with low to moderate support needs, and are skilled in offering guidance that meets each individual where they are.

Overview
Our Ko Wai Au team provides a comprehensive range of services, primarily focused on supporting rangatahi and their whānau. These services include but are not limited to mentorship and advocacy focusing on one-on-one mentorship and advocacy to help alleviate barriers for rangatahi.
Hauora Services - This includes mental health support through a dedicated Mental Health Practitioner, Registered Nurses, and our Whānau Worker. We provide holistic care aimed at addressing mental health, physical health, and overall well-being.
Opportunistic screening and Safety Planning - We utilize an opportunistic screening process for all rangatahi accessing services, ensuring that each individual receives appropriate, tailored support. Safety planning is also a key part of the process, ensuring that rangatahi are supported in making safe, informed decisions.
By providing preventative services, we work to address key challenges such as youth offending, disengagement from education, and mental health concerns. We aim to improve educational outcomes, increase workforce participation, and reduce the risk of youth suicide.

About the mentoring
Our services are not time-restricted or bound by fixed durations. The length of the mentor-mentee relationship is tailored to the needs of each individual rangatahi. This flexible approach allows us to build strong, trusting relationships and ensures that rangatahi are not rushed through their journey. Our Hauora services are not limited by the number of sessions or set timeframes. Each case is assessed individually, and we co-develop personalised plans with every rangatahi to support their wellbeing, goals, and aspirations. Mentor/mentee interactions occur as often as required; this can vary from weekly to more frequent, depending on the level of support needed and what is agreed upon in the individualised plan. Our focus is always on sustained, meaningful engagement that adapts to each rangatahi unique journey.
