Upside Youth Mentoring Aotearoa
At Upside we’re about supporting Aotearoa's young people to feel a little brighter and a little more loved than they did yesterday. Through responsive mentoring relationships, we’re making positive changes for children and their whanau who’ve had messy childhoods or adverse childhood experiences.
Our dream is to change the future of our nation. We've been matching young people with mentors since 2006 and with over 1,000 matches and 7,000 hours of mentoring a year, we’ve seen time and time again the life-changing effects of this connection.

Overview
Our volunteer mentors come from a wide range of ages, cultures, and backgrounds — from CEOs to students, parachutists to retirees. They foster meaningful, consistent one-on-one relationships that build confidence, resilience, and create a ripple effect throughout families, schools, and communities. Activities like muffin baking, movie watching, scrapbooking, shopping, dog walking, hanging out at home, or jamming on video games help strengthen the bond with the young person. Over time, they make a lasting impact on both the individual and their whānau.

About the mentoring
The age range we mentor is 9 to 13 years old. This is a standalone mentoring programme and the expectation is that the mentoring relationship will last at least 12 months. Mentors meet with the young person weekly.
