West Auckland Academic Mentoring

Sometimes it can be hard to achieve your potential in school, where you're always in a big class and nothing's tailored towards your needs and interests.

Focused, individual attention from a trained mentor could make a huge difference in what you achieve by the end of the year.

West Auckland Academic Mentoring (WAAM) pairs high school students with knowledgable volunteer mentors, who can help you with particular school subjects, while also providing guidance in goal setting, study skills, and keeping yourself motivated throughout the year.

Overview

At each session, you'll be paired with a mentor who can help you with your chosen subject (if you can attend regularly, we'll try to put you with the same mentor each time). For the next ninety minutes, they'll help you with setting goals, mastering the subject matter, and developing study skills which you can apply to your other classes. Because you'll be working one-on-one, the entire session can be tailored exactly to your own needs.

About the mentoring

The age range we mentor is 13 to 18 years old, attending a West Auckland school. Mentoring sessions run on Wednesday and Thursday evenings during term time. The expectation is that the mentoring relationship will last at least 6 months to a year. Mentors meet with the young person weekly.
