June 2015 - Youth Mentoring update
In this issue:
'Changing the trajectory of young people's lives through mentoring'
Announcement: Second edition of 'The Guide to Effective Practice in Youth Mentoring New Zealand' to be published
The NZ Youth Mentoring Network (NZYMN) is pleased to announce that it is about to commence a project to develop the second edition of The Guide to Effective Practice in Youth Mentoring New Zealand (The Guide). The first edition of the guide, published in 2008 has been a benchmark document for the sector, commissioned by the Ministry of Youth Development. It drew together essential knowledge for the emerging sector, providing an informative local resource for all who were interested in mentoring young people and in enhancing the role of mentoring in the wider youth development sector. The Ministry of Youth Development has confirmed a new grant for NZYMN to work with the youth sector and government agencies to develop the second edition of The Guide.
The second edition will be refreshed and updated with the latest evidence-based mentoring practice, as well as safe workforce regulations (Vulnerable Children's Act 2014) and voluntary worker safety guidance documents (Safer Recruitment Safer Children, and Safer Organisations Safer Children). The revised guide will also incorporate essential information from the Safe Practice Guidelines published by the Children's Action Plan and the NZ Youth Mentoring Network in 2013. The outcome will be the promotion of a single guide to effective and safe practice for mentoring that can be utilised by funders and providers. It will be designed as an accessible, ready reference document, to align it best to the context under which it is likely to be used.
We will be forming an advisory group of youth sector and government representatives. This will be a virtual group and members will have the opportunity to provide feedback on The Guide as it develops. If you are interested in being part of this group, or if there is particular information or resources you think should be considered for The Guide then please get in touch with me at nicki@youthmentoring.org.nz
We look forward to keeping you informed of progress on The Guide via our regular e-newsletter. Please do not hesitate to be in contact if you have any questions.
